It sure looks like you have some form of block corruption o your disk.

I suggest booting with the LiveCD or a Knoppix CD and run some diagnostic of your disk.

but hdd is a DVD-reader and there wasn't even a disc inserted (and the tray wasn't opened at the time); and there are no more messages now... I just don't get what it was...

thanks anyway :)

Hello.

I have the same problem. The kernel is 2.6.9-gentoo-r9 and the dmesg output shows the next statements:

the hdc device is the DVD unit (CD rewriteable), and there is no media on the unit at this moment.

hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 1
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 8
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 2
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 12
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 3
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 16
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 4
...

Does anyone knows what is causing this events? How can i find a solution to this problem?

Thanks a lot

Hello,

I have the same messages on dmesg.

The unit 'hdc' is the DVD reader of my laptop. I have the 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 kernel, but it also produces with the 2.6.10-gentoo-r4 version. The system runs perfectly, DVD unit incluided.

I have set the dma option on 'AUTO' (on the BIOS), and the next parameters on the /etc/conf.d/hdparm:

Code:
cdrom0_args="-c3 -d1 -X66 -k1"

The message of the dmesg are:

Code:
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 1
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 8
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 2
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 12
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 3
[...]
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 124
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 31
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 1
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 1
hdc: tray open
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 8
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 2

Anyone knows how can i resolv this problem? What's causing this messages? I think it could be about the DMA settings, but im not sure.

Thanks a lot.

Funny. Yours complains about the CD. Mine complains about the floppy.

Code:
end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Can't be a bad floppy. There is not one in there.

Strange.

:? :D :? :D

It's probably just something checking for a cd in the drive. vmware causes this to happen, and things like hal checking for a cd could cause it. Nothing to worry about

Hello !

I think that i have found the cause to this messages !!.

As it were said previously, certain applications (vmware for example) can be the causes of these strange messages.

In my case, I have detected that when executing Lotus Notes Client (using Crossover). Concretely, when making the replication of the data base.

I hope that it will be helpfull for all.

Bye
