I've been collecting a lot of old motor racing stuff online, mainly Formula-1, but also replacing some of my UK racing series VHS's with downloaded versions, usually just ropey VHS copies themselves ( cos if the stuff could be bought, I'd have bought it), but at least they don't degrade.

I now have a bunch of DVD's full of avi's and mpg's, and because of the nature of my online search, the content is in no order at all.

What I need is an application that let's me do the following.....

Shove a dvd, in the drive, read it's contents, give them an arbitrary number or name ( and I'll then label dvd with this) and repeat until they are all done. Then I need it to allow me to search it and list in different orders ( like...."What do I have from 1986").
I've been using

Code:

ls /mnt/burner>disc$N.txt
cat disc*.txt>masterlist

And appending disc names along the way, it works, but it's frumpy, cludgy, inellegant and not a whole heap of use.

I tried an app I spotted on freashmeat called "alexandria" which was in portage, but it wont run ( seems unable to find some of the ruby libs that were installed for it by portage....that may clear up if I restart X as it could be something to do with a new ruby environment setting that I wont pick up unless I re-login.......or not....I'm clutching at straws) , so rather than going on a great freshmeat/portage installation fest.........I thought I would ask the here-gathered wise ones if they knew of a clever and efficient way of doing this???

2 notes....
1. I can't program anything tougher than a vcr.
2. web based things give me the creeps :)

Try these:
http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=gwhere
http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=gtktalog
They are in portage. Personally I use WhereIsIt, but it's a windows app, so I use it on my wife's computer. :?
