Hello all,
I'd like to say that gentoo is going to be my favorite ( now SuSE8.1) because it's really fast.
There is one thing left I don't understand:
I'm using yp in the network and can not login with gentoo.
"ypcat user.byname" gives the correct reply from the ypserver but when I try to login it just replies login failed.
I also noticed that
"useradd -p test test" is creating a user "test" but the password is stored in cleartext in /etc/shadow and the login as user test also fails
What can I do where can I look for further hints ?
Thanks in advance

I never used ypcat user.byname. I just tried it and I don't get any output. What happens when you type something like:
ypcat passwd
It should show you a passwd/shadow file, and if `ypcat passwd` works, then you should be able to log in.
Commands like useradd only add/modify the local machine's /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files.
To add a yp/nis user, log into the yp master server, edit the yp passwd and shadow files (usually under /etc/yp/), then cd to /var/yp and run make.
Also, I had trouble with /etc/yp.conf being overwritten on every boot, so I had to make a hack since I still haven't found a solution (I posted it... just search for my userid). So ypbind would fail on boot and thus not get any of the maps.
