I have plenty of keyboards, mice, and monitors, but that is eating up desk space fast. So I'm looking for a good recommendation for a good 2-4 port KVM to start out with for a couple of my boxes. About all I have seen around the net and on the forums is the Belkin Omniview KVMs seem to have a lot of problems. _________________ Doomwookie

I haven't had any problems with my Belkin. In any case, just make sure to get one with mouse/keyboard emulation -- it'll make life a lot easier. |

i have a 4 port usb iogear kvm ($100 + 4 cables) that works very nicely. it doesn't make any strange noises, doesn't take control of the keyboard or anything like that... plus you can plug up to 4 devices into the kvm. this one replaced my old 2 port cybex switchview ps/2 kvm ($80 + 2 cables, used). it was a really good one, but it would take control of the keyboard if you hit the ctrl button three times (it really sucked to play starcraft :) _________________ In the end, the love you get is equal to the love you make

I can't give you any recomendations. But I can give you this. Stay away from Emine KVM switches.
Says it supports *nix OS's, but I had a lot of troubles anyway. You _have_ to buy their KVM cables and they cost almost as much as the KVM switch itself. Emine may have good-looking switches but my experience with them are not good. _________________ DnB is my religion, Jungle is my church. |

***UPDATE***
I finally ended up purchasing an IOGear Miniview 4-port switch(G-CS14). The only problem seems to be it loses the mouse if I restart xfree. Other than that, it switches great and my wheel mouse works fine. Thanks everybody for the recommendations. _________________ Doomwookie

I love my Hawking CS168. Works great (doesn't come with cables). It switches well via hotkeys and has buttons on the front as well. Never had a single problem with it.
I tried a linksys kvw2kit and it sucked. It only switches with hotkeys and they didn't work for crap with my wireless natural keyboard (worked ok with a wired keyboard). |

Losing the mouse can sometimes be remedied by doing a 'CTRL-ALT-F1' out of xfree and back in with 'CTRL-ALT-F7'. This worked for me when I had the same problem. It went away when I upgraded kernels, if I recall. You may also want to see about building psmouse as a module (CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2) instead of into the kernel, if you use a PS/2 mouse.
