Hi together,
in this forum i read much about installing Gentoo on Promise Fasttrak Raid Controller. I installed Gentoo
using this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-77811-highlight-p4c800.html (kernel 2.4) and it worked fine.
Now my Harddisk is broken and i have to install the system again.
I want to install a Dual Boot with Windows XP and want to change from kernel 2.4 to 2.6.10.
Befor i install the system again i have some questions.
1. Does Kernel 2.6.10 support Promise 20378 Raid Controller? Under Scsidevices in the Kernelconfig there are Modules for Promise Tx2/Tx4 but i dont know if they are for raid or single sata. When i boot with LiveCd 2003.4 i can see my sata drives,
but only seperated in 2 single Harddisks.
2. If Kernel 2.6.10 supports Promise Sata Raid is it possible to install a Dual Boot with WinXP?
3. Or is it better to change to Intel ICH5 Raid Controller on that Board? Is Kernel 2.6.10 supporting this one?
I heard that with the newest RH and Suse it is possible, but i want to install Gentoo.
Thanks for your answers
Have a nice day

Did you find an answer for this?
I'm trying to install Gentoo using LiveCD 2004.3-r1, onto a PDC20378 which is a Promise Fasttrak TX2+. I've tried enabling BIOS RAID and ATA functions and still I am unable to see either of the 2 drives I have attached! I'm intrigued how you have your drives setup and how you are able to see them with the LiveCD?
Code: | sata_promise version 1.00
ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xF8D44200 ctl 0xF8D44238 bmdma 0x0 irq 19
ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xF8D44280 ctl 0xF8D442B8 bmdma 0x0 irq 19
ata1: no device found (phy stat 00000000)
scsi1 : sata_promise
ata2: no device found (phy stat 00000000)
scsi2 : sata_promise

2.6 Kernel SATA Drivers is not for RAID support.
It suppose to use for normal SATA Drives for now. If you have configured 2 drivers RAID for it,
you will not see any drives. You can use software raid instead.
Or you can Use DMRaid for create Promise FASTTRACK RAID with 2.6 kernel with LVM2.
See http://people.redhat.com/~heinzm/sw/dmraid/
But you need another linux on other harddisk that see the controller to
install gentoo on it (chroot). _________________ Gentoo Mirrors in Thailand (and AP)

Thanks for the response, I found the dmraid but it wont compile, tried earlier versions too. I'm in the process of installing Gentoo onto a USB hard drive atm but I guess I'm waisting my time as I currently have 2 drives setup as a spanned RAID with a XP install, was hoping to but Gentoo on the remaining half. I take it I should delete the RAID and use ATA only mode on this contrller card? |
