I am in the middle of a Gentoo install. I am running a stage 2 install, and am on step 6d in the install manual. While running the
everything was running fine, but then it was attempting to ftp shadow-4.0.5.tar.bz2 and after 5 attempts if failed and gave the following messege.
!!! Couldn't download shadow-4.0.5.tar.bz2. Aborting.
It then came back to the # and is waiting for whats next.....
My question. How do I tell whether I need to run emerge system again, or if this happened to be the last item, or if I stopped half way through the emerge system....????
Please help... _________________ Viperskin

You still need to continue with the emerge system. Things will pick up where you left off. Your computer couldn't make a connection so the shadow package could be downloaded. This probably has something to do with your mirrors (if you ran mirrorselect). I know I had a whole slew of problems getting my mirrors to work.
To continue where you left off, just emerge system again. |

Did you use the mirrorselect command for selecting the mirror?
Code: |
# mirrorselect -a -s4 -o |grep 'GENTOO_MIRRORS=' >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
|
If so, you could delete the line with GENOO_MIRRORS in it... (it worked for me _________________ Sorry, I don't understand... |

Same here. I deleted the GENTOO_MIRRORS line. Things did download slower, but they actually downloaded. (I've since tweaked my GENTOO_MIRRORS line to use servers that are fast for me to connect to.) |

Thanks!!
I did in fact run the mirrorselect command!
I will try just running emerge system again, and if that doesn't work I will remove the MIRRORS section and try yet again!!
Thanks!! Glad it was easy!! I did not want to do the whole thing over again..... _________________ Viperskin

That was my problem as well, also with the ghost package. It's a bit weird this isn't mentioned in the manual, because a server timeout is quite common. Also, the mirrors mirrorselect choose weren't connecting at all! Anyway, I also deleted the line since the manual stated it was optional. I rebooted, mounted everything again, chrooted and ran emerge system again without any problem. |
