|
|
While playing games of any type, the sound crackles, fuzzes, and pops almost constantly. It does not do this when I play a movie or music. I have tried linking my newer libraries to the old ones the game is trying to use but this does not help. I'm not quite sure what the problem is but I believe it may be within the kernel. I have a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS using "emu10k1" drivers. I suppose I am just posting to see if this is just a problem with me, or if its a common problem some other people are having also. I have looked in the forum and it seems a few other people are having trouble but there does not seem to be a chronic problem or any solution. Any clarification or help would be greatly appriciated. Please do not hesitate to request additional information if needed.

I do not know if this makes any difference but I am on the "anticipatory" I/O scheduler.
Code: | bash-2.05b# cat /sys/block/hda/queue/scheduler

I had this same problem in the past and it drove me nuts. Sound was working fine then one day, just like you mention I started getting the anoying pops, crackles and other noises. If I had my head phones on and was compiling programs it was really annoying and every mouse click I made seemed to make a poping noise in the headphones or speakers. I am not sure what caused the problem. After a major HD crash I had to rebuild the entire system. After the rebuild (got it running yesterday) I was careful to see if this was going to occur again. Sound appears to be working just great again.
While playing around with some of the mixer settings in gnome yesterday, I noticed that if I turned on one of the didgital controls I suddenly got this annoying sound again. I can't tell you exactly which one because I have somewhere around a hunderd and fifty controls. WHY I HAVE THIS MANY I HAVE NO IDEA I will try to figure out which one it is and post back here.
My system is a MSI KT3 ULTRA mobo with a 1.4 gig T-Bird w/ on board sound disabled.
I have a audigy gamer using the same drivers as you.
I am using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6
Sound support is built into the kernel, which I may change as I have read the externel drivers from alsa are newer than the ones provided by the kernel.
The only other thing that seems strange to me is, it appears that the kernel builds support for the onboard sound device even though I have it disabled. I can't confirm this because I just don't know enough about the workings of linux yet. I just know it builds some AC97 sound device which I know my onboard sound would use if I were to use it. |

I updated my kernel to:
Code: | Linux version 2.6.11-rc4-nitro1 (root@linux) (gcc version 3.3.5 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.5-r1, ssp-3.3.2-3, pie-8.7.7.1)) #1 Sat Feb 19 01:10:14 EST 2005 |
ALSA got updated in the new kernel:
Code: | Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.8 (Thu Jan 13 09:39:32 2005 UTC) |
It no longer seems to crackle when I play games. But, the sound seems a bit distorted. Such as, when someone walks around on something metal in America's Army, it will play the noise such as its under water. Better than before but still not the best. Anyone got any ideas? |
