I wonder if anyone has tryed the new nv driver in xorg 6.8.2 and how does it compare to the closed source one?

hmm, just wondering.. special reasons why you would like to get rid of the closed source nvidia drivers?
OTOH, yes, i would be interessted in this as well, just out of curiousity, though.. still running xorg 6.8.0-r4 over here
hmm.. infact nvidia doesnt give out enough technical information, i really wonder about this new nv driver.. IMHO it could never support that many features as the closed source one by nvidia itself, but yours mileage might vary.. |

It (the nv driver) works nicely here. I _would_ compare it to the proprietary driver, but I _can't_, since the 1.0-6111 kernel module doesn't compile, and the 1.0-6629 drivers don't work with my Riva TNT2 card. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Well freedom, why do we want Java open sourced?
However I agree that the driver will never be as good as the commerical one without nvidias support. |

It needlessly confuses two entirely different concepts. Free software can be commercial too. Please read more about this isse on the FSF's website. Thanks.

did i understood this wrong? i understood him that way, that xorg 6.8.2 would have nvidia with 3D acceleration build in
infact of this, you wouldnt need the nvidia kernels in portage at all.. hmm..
OTOH we dont ahve to argue about the nv driver, sure works, but no acceleration. just wondering
well, didnt install 6.8.2 yet. - so i was just curious if it has 3D at all. otherwise the topic wouldnt make sense to me. |

I've checked glxinfo and it tells me I'm not using direct rendering (e.g., I'm not using any 3-D hardware acceleration). _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

well, should be enough to mention SCO/Linux, and lets assume all the rest is GNU
[leaving Unix Sys V, Xenix (and whatnot) apart, cause noone in here will use those anyway]
just my 2cents (not "swedish kroners") |

you would need direct rendering manager in the kernel, to get 3d acceleration from the xorg drivers |

I've the the Direct Rendering Manager compiled in the kernel 2.6.10, but
Code: | # glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
................
|
My GeForce 2 GTS with 32MB with xorg 6.8.2 give the following result
Code: |
846 frames in 5.0 seconds = 169.200 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
840 frames in 5.0 seconds = 168.000 FPS
|
and with the nvidia driver 1.0-5336:
Code: |
5591 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1118.200 FPS
6181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1236.200 FPS
6180 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1236.000 FPS
5804 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1160.800 FPS
5633 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1126.600 FPS
6038 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1207.600 FPS
6039 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1207.800 FPS
6070 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1214.000 FPS
6190 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1238.000 FPS
6085 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1217.000 FPS
5882 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1176.400 FPS

If I am referring to the entire OS, I call it GNU/Linux. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Woah! This a fantastic improvement! I just ran glxgears again (yes, I know, not a good benchmark...) and I got ~190 FPS. Last time I used the proprietary driver I got ~320 FPS, and with X.org 6.8.1 i got ~90 FPS without hardware acceleration. This is on a Riva TNT2 M64, 2x AGP, 32 MB.
Holy crap. I'm getting ~19 FPS full-screen (1152x864)....this is crazy stuff.... _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Are you running Xorg.6.8.2? What Nvidia drivers are you using? I am having problems setting nvidia up with new version and can only get X running with "nv" with my Riva TNT2
Thanks

to the guy that asked if i tried it: no, i didnt, i just know it...
you ppl also need to load the dri module in xorg.conf, plus set permissions to something like 0660 in xorg.conf too, and then finally do opengl-update xorg-x11, then it will use direct rendering, and it will be usable, not nearly as good as nvidia driver, but okay (unless ofcourse they made a extremely good driver in latest release) |
