Any suggestions for a good CD ripper in linux? I currently use sound-juicer, but it doesn't have support for changing quality settings... any other suggestions?

cdparanoia works well enough for me, since I tag my files myself anyway.

mmh, so far I like grip the best, automatic tagging, paranoia options, quality options. If sound juicer had options to set sound quality, I would switch. thanks for your help all!

If the ripping itself is slow (as opposed to encoding), try using SCSI emulation instead. It is generally much faster and more secure when ripping audio CD's.

Make sure you have SCSI emulation, SCSI CD-ROM and SCSI Generic support in your kernel (or load them - I have ide-scsi in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6) and add <ide-device>=ide-scsi to your boot parameters. The IDE disk name of my CD-ROM is /dev/hdc so I add "hdc=ide-scsi" to the end of the kernel line in my grub.conf.

Reboot to make the boot parameters appy, then set up Grip to use your SCSI device instead of the IDE device and rip away.

You will also have to change your /etc/fstab to accomodate for this change. Edit the line which defines the CD-ROM and its mount point and change the device to your SCSI device name (usually /dev/scd0).

Is there a reason SCSI emulation would make it better? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think cdparanoia does some fairly low level things, I wouldn't want to get in the way of it.

If you notice slow rips, that probably means your CDs are scratched up. :)

Actually, cdparanoia does work better - or at least faster - with SCSI emulation. Try it.

What do you think: I have a dvd/cdrw combo drive.
From kernel help:
Quote:
ide-scsi is no longer needed for cd writing applications! The 2.6 kernel supports direct writing to ide-cd, which eliminates the need for ide-scsi + the entire scsi stack just for writing a cd. The new method is more efficient in every way.

What to do?
Increase performance with cd-ripping or with cd-writing?

Well, I'm still not convinced about CD paranoia being better with SCSI emulation. Regardless, if you use a ripper like Grip which rips and encodes at the same time and your processor is only of a reasonable speed you'll be spending more time encoding then ripping anyways. Meaning ripping quicker won't actually make the whole process that much quicker.

And its not a matter of cd writing being quicker. Its whether the CD writers are working or not.

Actually i'm using Grip, but I think it is very slow. And I think it is is using my analog output from my sound card and not a real digital ripping. Am I wrong?

Thalks for your help,

Gustavo Motta :(

Turn off paranoia on grip to make it rip much faster.

Or try abcde (a better cd encoder) or rip is nice.

Ha, well if your going to turn off paranoia you might as well get some crappy WMAs from KaZaA. I suppose it depends where your priorities are.

abcde and grip are just front ends to encoders, not actually encoders themselves. I'd be very surprised that it would make much difference.

I used to use grip with cdparanoia as well but it took ages to rip. I switched to cdda2wav for ripping instead and everything works much faster now. :)
