HP dv1000 series laptop and ipw2200 wlan. RF dead = no netwk

I bought this laptop (dv1170us specifically) going by this page.

The wireless LAN doesn't seem to work. Specifically I get error messages about the RF kill switch being on and "iwconfig eth1 power on" errors out with "Operation not supported". The button seems software controlled and the rfswitch.sf.net project doesn't seem to support my laptop.

I have all the kernel dependencies, firmware, and hotplug scripts.

Does anyone know what the difference is between my dv1170 and the dv1067 is? What step did I miss? Will this work?
