I am completely new to Linux, so keep that in mind. Gentoo seems like a great distro from what I've read, so I wanted to use it. I realize it is not as newbie friendly as others.

Here is my problem:

I have the LIVE CD with the minimal files so that I can install from the net. I use links2 to get the various stages. I got through extracting the stage 1 file with no problem. I downloaded the portage snapshot, but when I run the tar command and the files starts extracting, it goes on for a LONG time and then it tells me there is no room left on my device.

I am installing to a 10 gig partition, with a 2 gig partition as swap space (hda7 and hda8 respectively). I know this installation can't be that big. Any suggestions?
