|

Ok so i finally got gentoo working after a long time of compiling. I booted up, got it all working great. Logged in, great and then rebooted. I then proceeded to swap the agp video card and replace it with a pci video card, because i need the agp on another computer (it's matrox died on it). I quickly swap the card and reboot. What i get is:\
Code: | [<c0100460>] init+x0x0/0x110
[<c010048a>] init+x0x2a/0x110
[<c0101298>] kernel_thread_helper+0x0/0x18
[<c010129d>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0x18
Code: 24 8b 48 18 83 c1 07 c1 e9 03 89 4c 24 1c 8b 58 1c b9 00 01 00 00 b8 aa aa |
So i force reboot. Then my screen just goes all static white on black. In a wierd pattern like if the sync was off. Then i reboot the computer with livecd and recompile the kernel. I reboot and get the code above and on the second reboot i get the same damn static white on black screen. Never loads. What could have happened after i changed the card? I don't get this, if i recompiled the kernel it should be ok. I'll try swapping the card again and seeing if it works. In the meantime, anyone got any advice? _________________ -bobbens

first of all, do you get this black / white screen when X is loading or does it appear all the time? |

I think you have damaged your replacement card by hot-swapping it when the computer was on.
Try the card on a known working system. If it is really on the fritz, time to dig out some bucks for a new card. |

No i'm sure i didn't. I wouldn't make such a big mistake, and i'm sure the fans where off when i did the swap. It just seems that the kernel doesn't like the new card, after work today i'll run some tests to see why one card works and not the other. Probably the agp/pci switch messed it up. _________________ -bobbens

try wiping the firmware. make sure that hard power is turned off and then pop the cmos battery on the motherboard for about ten minutes. Then everything will be set back to defaults and should give you a clean slate |

I don't think that is the problem. I can boot into the livecd with the card and i get fine output, i can also see my bios and all the boot up fine, it's just that when grub loads the tux splash screen the screen fucks up, and i can't see anymore text. I'm thinking about doing a complete reinstall (didn't even get to finish the install). So we can pretty much discard the bios and card being bad, also any other hardware parts, it's gotta be the kernel, or the system, didn't think it would cause that many problems. Right now i'll get to reinstalling it all again. I don't think there is any other way around this, because i've tried with various kernel settings and the video card module is compiled in. Wait, maybe it could be that. Going to try using the video card as a module. _________________ -bobbens

And today's lesson is, don't compile the graphic card drivers into your kernel . Stupid stupid me. _________________ -bobbens
