G'Day there ,I havn't had my gentoo desktop installed for very long but read it was a good idea to update the system before installing to many packages ,but I had already installed a few packages through Porthole before I read this in a gentoo post. So anyway I ran "emerge --update --deep world" and I eventually got a error " Calculating world dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 103) media-libs/svgalib-1.9.19-r3 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) svgalib-1.9.19.tar.gz

!!! ERROR: media-libs/svgalib-1.9.19-r3 failed.
!!! Function kernel-mod_configoption_builtin, Line 114, Exitcode 1
!!! kernel has not been configured yet
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message." So do I have to do something with the Kernel to be able to update my system as I thought the kernel was already compiled ,I had installed packages like hddtemp and ide-smart through portage before I tried To update system..

Make sure you have your kernel's sources in /usr/src/linux, and that it's properly configured and built.
