|
|
Hi all. I installed 2004.2 (gentoo-dev-sources) on a toshiba laptop (mobile pentium 4 / 512 mb ram / ati chipset board / phoenix bios).
I am trying to update mozilla to version 1.0, and out of all dependencies is also the latest gcc (3.3.5 if i remember correctly).
While gcc is being compiled, at some point my system crashes out of nowhere! Note, that I do the compilation on console mode (no X running),
Can someone please help? Is this normal behaviour? Do you want me to copy/paste any log here?
Thank you
ps. Terribly sorry if this the wrong forum to post this. Well, I figured it's probably some hardware malfunction (the processor?). |

Maybe you're system is going to hot. Is your fan working?
If not, enable ACPI in your kernel config, merge acpitool and start the daemon (/etc/init.d/acpid start (or something like that))

I had the same problem when compiling larger things on my laptop from time to time. After it had happend a few times I recognised that my cpu temperature reached 90 degree Celsius and then crashed. I already had installed acpi and the fan was running at max speed. The problem is that the air intake of my laptop is on the bottom side so normaly there is no good air circulation. To solve this problem I put my laptop on two feet, so there is more space under it what provides better air circulation. Since then I never had problem again with crashing during compiling.
Hope I could help you with that. _________________ A rainy day in May... |

Thanks both of you for replying. I installed the acpitool but unfortunately I don't get any temperature readings. Are you aware of any other tool that could help me accomplish that?
I will try the 'feet' trick you suggest and keep you posted. Seems weird though, since when I installed the OS, the kernel got compiled fine unless the gcc compilation process uses more resources and pushes the processor to its limits ![Rolling Eyes ](images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) |

woohoo! the feet thing helped after all
I placed the laptop on top of 4 hard cd cases so that it will help with the air circulation and I finally managed to compile all my stuff ... thank you for all your help guys! |
