I finally installed Gentoo, and got it working pretty well using the genkernel.

Everything works fine, execpt when I emerged ati-drivers and then did the X -configure thing, it just flat out doesn't work anymore, which is strange since I didn't do anything but emerge anything.

Anyways, is there a more detailed tutorial on installing ATI drivers, I have the Radeon 9500 Pro, I downloaded the drivers, but don't know how to do the whole xorg.conf thing, I always seem to screw it up.

And if you are reading, can someone also tell me how do you recompile your kernel. Do you just emerge the kernel and run the configuration thing. And then that is all?

Any tutorials to that as well would be helpful.

Thanks

It's usually best to run "fglrxconfig" to create your xorg.conf for use with the ATI driver. The link in my sig has some instructions for installing the driver that should help you out.

Follow these two tutorials from the Gentoo-Wiki:
Kernel configuration
ATI Drivers

Do not compile the kernel until you have read the second howto, as there are a few kernel configuration options that must be set correctly for ATI drivers to work.

I may just be the case that your xorg.conf is wrong, as you should use fglrxconfig to configure for the ATI drivers (rather than X -configure), however, if you have not configured a kernel before, I would recommend you read the above howtos. When you've done it once, it will seem easy the next time.

I just can't get it to work, when I used the fglrxconfig command, it went through, but it always failed when i did start x and said something about my keyboard not being found or something.

Is it possible when I used genkernel that the options I needed for the ATI 9500 Pro wasn't selected and that I really do have to do the kernel myself?

And thanks for those two links sorcerer

If you are using Xorg 6.8, then you must make an edit to the file fglrxconfig outputs; after you've renamed "XF86Config-4" to xorg.conf, open it up, and find the keyboard driver section where you will find "Keyboard" in quotes; change "Keyboard" to "kbd," otherwise X will fail complaining that it cannot find a keyboard driver.

Just found that... I will try it, again thanks for those links
