|
|
Hello,
Does anyone know of any "startbar" like the OS X has? I am running XFCE4.2 with xorg, and I'm looking for something as close to the OS X bar it can get. I have used gDesklets startbar earlier, it's good, but I were wondering if there was anything even better out there?
And also, does anyone know of a good site with neat icons with alpha blending and such? I really, really want something like that
Thanks for any help in advance. |

I would use kxdocker (if using KDE) or gdesklets starterbar (if using gnome) (or do what I do and use none until either kxdocker comes out with a new version or engage is easier to configure) Engage is a beautifull app and with opengl working properly is the best bar out there. Problem is, with the level it is at now, it is really hard to get configured properly. Of course if you decide to use it and you figure it out I would love for you to tell me how you did it. |

It's non-trivial to configure though, at least be prepared to read some E17 related stuff. You'll have to install E17 (the windowmanger and the EFL libraries) in order to add icons to Engage. _________________ Interested in E17? Get Enlightened by reading the user guide. |

I hope engage eventually becomes drag and drop, like the OSX bar... the configuration is one hell of a pain, finding the hundreds of icon files are impossible, and you DEFINITELY don't want to make them yourself :-p |

A little birdie told me a rumor from a friend of a friend of an uncle of a step-brother of a nephew to someone who knows that kxdocker will be supporting drag and drop icons in its next version. Of course it's only being alpha tested now though. I realy like kxdocker, especilly with its pluggin system (I love the mount pluggin). But man does engage look nice. |

Hm, okay. Thanks for the tip
If engage really is that hard to configure, I'll just stick to gDesklets, then. |

Engage will propably be integrated even tighter to E17 (in other words becomes a module). Making icons is pretty trivial these days after e_utils was made. You can also just click the top left corner and select create icon for apps. The downside with gdesklets stuff is that they run in software mode only - Engage uses 2-3% cpu here while zooming icons (and it looks better too) :) _________________ Interested in E17? What did you do, to make engage only use 2-3 % cpu???
Here it uses 50-60 % cpu while zooming, although I used engage -e gl. And another strange thing: I recently updated engage (from cvs) and now while zooming icons it is not even smooth any more (in OpenGL mode). |

I have the same problem w/ engage hogging cpu in opengl mode and not "moving" smoothly/stuttering. I think it's just because I run dual head all the time and it kinda taxes my vidcard (direct rendering on both displays). On the other hand though, if I run it in software mode it runs smooth as silk but stills uses up a ton of cpu.
I too am waiting for drag and drop icons or atleast menu configurable icons in engage. I have a couple engage bars setup with the icons I want but it is tedious to run the build_icon.sh script everytime you want to add an icon. |

opengl-mode might be slower and more resource intensive than software render mode -- for now. I'm still waiting for evas render.

build_icon.sh should be legacy by now...I think. On the cvs -- and I assume the latest ~ flagged ebuilds, we're using the e_utils package, which gives you a graphical application (looks kinda like examine) to configure new icons... it's a bit more fun that using the build script, i think. Plus, it creates in a new format called .eapp, which is used in enlightenment menus and in the enlightenment ibar. pretty stuff. _________________ My Last.fm profile | get e17! |

well, everything works smooth here, no lags or something using latest engage in opengl mode.
when i move the mouse over and "play" whith it, i got about 15-20% cpu too, but only then. if i don't i'm on my normal 0-3%, apache runnig --> 2-8% or something...
and well i don't think of moving my mouse over engage for some hours (even that looks pretty neat ) so i have absolutely no problem with the cpu usage when moving it over
vrln has a ht p4 AFAIK, so 2-3% on his machine mean about 8-10% or so on my 1800 athlon-xp fsb 266... that's all quite relative... + apache there are about 30-40% in use when i move mouse over engage.... even that calculation doesn't mach...
what's the prob... you move mouse over enage for 12-24 hours? well then i'd be worried too
cheers! _________________ http://proaudio.tuxfamily.org/wiki - pro-audio software overlay

true for me, too... no lag on my modest system (or even my pIII@600GHz laptop). Not sure how much resources it uses up though. How do I tell? _________________ My Last.fm profile | get e17! |

I keep gKrellm open all the time.
Being a Fluxbox user, I enjoy using iDesk, but that doesn't really apply here...see screenshot... |
