I have problems with programs that use oss. These are amarok, quake3, doom3, skype, even arts seems not to work propertly.

Quake3 output:
Quote:

------- sound initialization -------
Could not mmap dma buffer PROT_WRITE|PROT_READ
trying mmap PROT_WRITE (with associated better compatibility / less performance code)
/dev/adsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/adsp
------------------------------------

I tried
Code:
aoss mplayer /something.mp3

Quote:

....
AF_pre: 44100Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/sound/dsp: Device or resource busy
alsa-init: got device=0, subdevice=0
alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default

and this
Code:
alsaplayer -d ossmix

Quote:

NOTE: THIS IS THE NULL PLUGIN. YOU WILL NOT HEAR SOUND!!

If I test arts in kcontrol center, then works, but actual events don't. Whats the problem?

Amarok only woks with arts engine. It doesn't work with gstreamer engine. Don't know why!

I have these installed:
Quote:

media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.7 *
media-libs/alsa-oss-1.0.7 *
media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.6 *
media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.8_rc1 *

media-sound/alsaplayer-0.99.76 *
media-plugins/gst-plugins-alsa-0.8.5-r1 *
media-plugins/alsa-jack-1.0.7 *

my lsmod output:

soundcore 10272 2 snd
fglrx 239936 7

it seems that arts and oss don't work, or at least propertly.

I hope this is not too confusing to you guys as it is to me. I have tried all the howtos!

Please HELP!

DFMax,

It appears that you have ALSA built outside the kernel. ALSA drivers 1.0.8 has problems with some 2.6 kernels, you get undefibed symbols all over the place. There is no reason to use alsa-drivers with a 2.6 kernel and a via82xx sound chip. USe the ALSA modules supplied with your kernel.
I prefer to make ALSA as modules but you don't have to, you can make it 'built in' if you must. As you use alsa-driver, you must use modules at the moment.

Just unmerge alsa-driver from your system
