I still use fluxbox-0.1.14-r2 w/ gcc33 patch, menukey patch, remember patch, toggledecor patch and vano patch. Why?
AFAIK, the newer fluxboxes still don't implement the workspace menu on the toolbar anymore. I need this.
And i like to see %A %b %d %k:%M in the clock portion of the toobar, but this old fluxbox must ./configure without using strftime. I'd noodled the sources into building with strftime under any circumstances, but then there is hdd access every 5 seconds when running that build of fluxbox.
In my gentoo or slackware, so i doubt it's any distros fault of how gcc had been built. I do think this is gcc related, btw.

What i was wondering is if anyone could please tell me their opinion whether they believe
it would be easier to re-implement with a patch the workspace list menu from the toolbar in a new fluxbox,
or hack the old 0.1.14 sources to play strftime correctly- i.e. no hdd activity. Then i'll have to bite the bullet and learn how to code enough to 'fix' my fluxbox.

I'd been waiting awhile for a resolution to this, but i don't think anyone uses 0.1.14 or uses the workspace menu on the toolbar. (i can't believe i'm the only one) I've googled this and checked many forums since the first release beyond 0.1.14, with no success.

I greatly appreciate any positive feedback, and thanks for at least reading this far.

I'm using up-to-date version of fluxbox, and it has a workspace menu (you mean the one you get with the middle mouse key, right?), and I can edit the clock format (right click on the clock -> edit format). I don't know about hdd access, since I got database running on my machine which causes hdd access all the time anyway.
