I have Gnome 2.6 on my laptop. It was running for both me (my userid) and the root userid. The root userid is still working correctly. My personal userid will not function correctly. How can I reconfigure / install Gnome for one userid? If I were to add another user how would I set them up so that they could use Gnome?

What exactly isn't functioning? Can you log into gnome as the user?
If gnome appears "all screwed up", this might help:
Gnome keeps configuration files under the users home directory. They are usually hidden so use ls -a to reveal them. You can compare these to your root home dir to try to figure out what's wrong. I've got these files and directories:
Code: | .gnome
.gnome-desktop
.gnome2
.gnome2_private
.gnome_private |
I would consider deleting (or better yet mv to another folder) all these files with a reference to "gnome" in the filename. When you login to gnome as that user it should recreate them with default settings.
Of course you'll lose your settings and maybe some application data so be careful when you delete anything.
