Hi,

I was using genkernel and emerged coldplug. Now I compiled my own Kernel and therefor deleted coldplug from my default runlevel.
Now I found out that one of my Networkcards aren't working anymore(which is no suprise, since I didn't compile in the support for that type of card.)
Just for the fun of it I added coldplug to the default runlevel again, and now the networkcards works again. How can that be? Does coldplug bring his own Modules or something?

Thanks,

Chris

No one knows how coldplug works??

I still haven't found any satisfying answers.

Thanks,

Chris

Maybe when you compiled your own kernel you compiled some stuff as modules?

So coldplug is needed to load modules?

That's exactly what coldplug does. It loads modules automatically so you don't have to specify which ones to load in a config file. Whether you've just compiled your own kernel doesn't matter -- what matters is whether or not you've compiled support for your hardware into the kernel or compiled it in as a module. If your network card only works with coldplug, then you've compiled it in as a module.

It apparently also calls the network initialization scripts after loading the module (just as hotplug does). Very useful, although it did confuse me a bit initially. :)

Is it bad to use Coldplug? I mean does it slow the system down?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't know that coldplug slows down your system. I know coldplug is very aggressive in the way it loads modules which can sometimes cause problems. For some reason coldplug will never allow me to coldplug pci devices so I just build them into my kernel or autoload them.
