so how do I add one of "gd gd-external cpdflib" to package.use, my current layout of that file is:

also, which one should i put in package.use for php5?

As a disclaimer I must say that I haven't done this myself, but this:
...in package.use should do the trick.

Check the buglist, I remember seeing a bug report on gd-external and php5.
Might be that you just hit this bug.

that worked great, thanks a bunch. i also had to add "dba" , but after that it went through smoovely.
