hi all,

im at work right now and i dont have my laptop with me, but i was wondering if i emerge xfce does that install 4.0 or 4.2? i was reading that i may need to unmask something in portage to get xfce4.2

im just trying to do some research before i get home tonight.

There is no package called xfce, just xfce4. This emerges XFCE 4.2 which is marked stable (so no package unmasking).

XFCE 4.2 used to be in the portage tree as testing, so you had to unmask it. Assuming that your using an x86 processor, XFCE 4.2 is now marked as stable, so just running emerge xfce4 will emerge XFCE 4.2. The xfce4 ebuild is really just a list of dependencies, so if you ever want to install a testing version of XFCE, you'll have to add all these to your /etc/portage/package.keywords file:
Code:
xfce-base/xfce4 ~x86
xfce-base/xfwm4 ~x86
xfce-base/libxfce4util ~x86
xfce-base/libxfce4mcs ~x86
xfce-base/libxfcegui4 ~x86
dev-libs/dbh ~x86
xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager ~x86
xfce-extra/xfwm4-themes ~x86
xfce-base/xfprint ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-trigger-launcher ~x86
xfce-base/xfce4-panel ~x86
xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins ~x86
xfce-base/xfce4-base ~x86
x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-icon-theme ~x86
xfce-base/xffm ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-toys ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-mixer ~x86
xfce-base/xfce-utils ~x86
xfce-base/xfdesktop ~x86
xfce-base/xfce4-session ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-appfinder ~x86
xfce-extra/xfce4-systray ~x86
xfce-extra/xfcalendar ~x86

this is with no adding keywords or unmasking anything.

Yip. If you run "emerge xfce4," you will install XFce 4.2 without modifying your /etc/portage/package.keywords! I have been using it since it first became stable and everything works just fine here... Try it and you will love it!
