I have 2 Boards with Via Chipset, a kt133 and a kt600.
I also have a nforce2 board.
I use the same hardware and kernel (2.6.10 with via and nforce chipset support) on all 3 boards (duron 1800, 512MB, AGP-Video) except that the kt133 needs sdram.
On all boards i have the neccessary drivers in my kernel and all devices are properly detected.
On the nforce2 hdparm -t gives me 60MB/s, on the VIAs only <30 MB/s.
There also is a very noticably difference in the sound of the hdd, it sounds much slower.
Some output from the kt600 which im currently on:
Code: |
sta linux # dmesg | grep VIA

On #gentoo i met one with the same problem and one where it works, searching the forums i found others which similar problems with via ide.
Why does nobody say out loud that the via ide support of the linux kernel does totally suck?
Im not complaining, but we want to know this before we buy the Boards.
[update]
When i switched from the nforce2 board to the kt600, the kt600 would not accept the ide-cable which i used all the time. therefore i picked one of those that came with the board and it was a 40pin cable ![Embarassed ](images/smiles/icon_redface.gif) |

Hi,
on my KT266A I get around 38MB/sec. Maybe other chipsets perform better.
But, OTOH, what does it matter, thats only the transfer rate from the harddisk cache to the buffercache of Linux. That has nothing to do with real world performance, where the harddisk has cache misses in it's internal cache, and it has to position from track to track. Where latencies in the range of milliseconds occur. If I may say ![Cool 8)](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |
