what are USE flags used for? For exmple, If I include 'samba' flag, and recompile the world (emerge world), will kio_smb be included in KDE?
What is the best parameters for emerge (world) to keep exiting system configs |

I quick example would be: The USE flags kerberos, ldap, bind used when emerging or building samba would compile samba with those features built into the samba package. It is the same for things like apache, etc. Lets say you needed samba to connect to an ADS domain, and you did not use the kerberos, ldap and bind flags. When you try to join the domain it would give you any multitude of errors, one of which could possibly be, 'ADS support not compiled in' This indicates that samba could not connect to the domain because it was not optimized to use kerberos. USE flags can also be used to exclude items. Like building certain packages without certain features can save you on compilation time and diskspace.
Hope this helps, but as mentioned by the other poster. Just read the docs for USE flags. Once you get a better understaing of how they work, you will be able to better choose and install you aps. |
