Reading the handbook I need at least 64MB of Ram.

My question is if it is possible to install gentoo perhaps with an older version.

My specs:

AMD K6 200Mhz
32 MB RAM
1.3 GB HD
32x CDR
Realtek 8139 Netcard

Yeah, but you may have to compile the packages on another box or use procompiled stages... But i doubt you would have issues assuming you have enough disk space.

I made a nice mini system for my laptop using buildroot (builds a system out of uclib and busybox) (laptop only has 8mb of ram).

So short answer yes. Long answer is it work your time?

If not try a mini distro.

Even though you seem to have decided not to do this...

I once compiled a system on a P4 and then put it back onto two Pentium-Pro 166 boxes with 64 MB RAM. It ran *very* nicely. I am guessing that if you built a light system, it would work just fine with 32MB RAM too. Just don't even attempt to compile on that box! (I would recommend against distributed compiling too, with that low amount of memory, just compile on another box and then copy the files over.)

i routinely do distributed compiling with 64 MB machines and they typically only use a little over 50% of their RAM. i think that at 32 MB, you would be just under the amount of ram needed to keep you from constantly swapping. with 32 MB, compiling could be painful.

I'm currently in the middle of making my very first linux installation on an old P2 400mhz, 64mb SD, 8gb hdd - system.

I'm following Bob P's exellent Stage 1 NPTL on a Stage 3 Tarball guide. It will surely come as no surprise for any of you that following such a procedure is indeed a very time consuming project.

Then having read what I quote from cazort made me think... Could it be possible for me to do the install for the P2400 on my desktop which is an AMD XP-M if I made the same choices as if I was doing the install on the p2 itself..??

Hope I'm not totally out in the woods here.. I would be willing to do a lot of messing around with hardware if I could cut down those 10 to 15 hour GCC compilations for future references.

Sorry if this post is in fact a bit off topic - since you were already slightly on the subject I figured it would be alright

Regards Tesi

with only 1.3 GB of Ram, you'll probably want to make sure the source is deleted after emerging a package, otherwise, you'll run out of space pretty quickly
