I'm trying to install gentoo1.4_RC2 and am having a few problems.

I've managed to start from stage 1 and successfully created the bootstrap. However on stage2, which I new was going to take a long time the screen goes blank after a while and the computer doesn't seem to respond. This happened during the bootstrap aswell but that completed with an hour and a half. I left the computer for two and half hours during stage2 but i'm not sure it's doing anything as there are no signs such as the hdd lights flashing accasionally.

How long should the stage2 process take. I've got a 2.4ghz P4 if that helps.

Also the only things I changed in the /etc/make.conf file were

A) USE=" X -gnome -gtk qt kde dvd mpeg"
B) CFLAGS$="pentium4 -03 pipe" (this was the example of a p3 but i just changed it to p4)

Thanks for your help
:(

Turn off BIOS APM (Power Management) particulary the VGA aspects, and make sure the kernel/linux drivers do not support it.

Then , tell us what the error messages are !!

I had the same problem when i tried doing the install in wmware 3.2 in windows2000.

However before I read this message I read some of thwe p4 related posts and tried using "-march=pentium4 -02 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" as a result and(fingers crossed) it's seemed to have worked. I've now completed both stage1 and stage2 without a hitch.

Thanks
