Hi,
I'm trying to install Gentoo on a AMD64 system. My motherboard is a Epox 9NDA3+, and it has an onboard 1-Gbps ethernet adapter Vitesse VSC8201 LAN PHY, which I'd love to activate. However, Gentoo does not auto-find it, and I cannot find the name of the card in the current gentoo-dev-sources kernel in the 1000-bits section.
It seems the LAN interface borks things up in Knoppix, as trying to boot Knoppix 3.7 freezes the system (Knoppix can be booted fine, however, by disabling the LAN in the BIOS menu).
Any hints? Do you know which cards this one is compatible with? _________________ Why is everybody always generalising? |

I got the name from the manual of the motherboard, so I suppose it's a reliable source... then again they might call something with a different name to make it seem like they have something new when it's just the usual 2-penny Ethernet.
EDIT: Turns out some dumb CEO pulled a nice trick. The VSC8201 used to be called CIS8201, until Vitesse acquired original producer Cicada. So they changed name to their products. Morons...
EDIT2: Cracked! The onboard NVidia ethernet, (VSC|CIS)8201, can be made working with either NVidia's proprietary driver or, better, by using the experimental yet apparently stable Forcedeth project directly in the Linux kernel. Yeee-ha! _________________ Why is everybody always generalising? |
