Is there a way to get portage to sync only a single packages ebuilds? This would be handy for those of us that sync nightly, but didn't catch the security update that was just commited with our last sync. We can either 'emerge sync' again, which is rude, or wait until it syncs tomorrow, which is "dangerous".

Its easy enough to use PORTAGE_OVERLAY to get quick security updates, but something built in would be nice. I can see problems with dependancies happening, but the built in portage smarts should help that. Also, I can see problems with the rsync protocol itself, but if you ask for certain files to be synced, it shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Please forgive me if I sound harsh, but your view of what is dangerous in terms of keeping up-to-date goes beyond paranoid. Do you run enough services on your system that each and every GLSA affects you? If that is the case, you're possibly your own worst enemy. One sync a day to the portage tree at a regular time is probably more than most anyone needs to keep a system up-to-date in terms of known package vulnerabilities.

There are much worse things to worry about than whether your last night's sync missed a package revision that was committed 15 minutes later, especially since you've got another sync coming up again tonight. By the way, in all likelihood the GLSA you're reading that was posted this morning (hypothetical, bear with me) had the updated package committed to the portage tree 2 to 3 days ago! Give yourself a break and don't sweat it quite so much :)

..which is exactly why I said "dangerous" in quotes. :) Not many GLSA's affect me, and I admit I've been up to date for important packages before the GLSA even came out. I was just wondering if it were possible.
