Hi!
I have problem getting my SATA harddrive working when I try to install gentoo
In /dev there isn´t something with sd* like its supposed to be
The controller is Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI or Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA controller
if that says you something

It seems like if fdisk sometimes finds the harddrive when I boot sometimes but most times doesn´t. I´m booting from LiveCD 2004.3 if that is to any help. |

How is the RAID controller setup, as RAID or combination SATA/PATA?
Which modules are loaded? can you show us the out put of lsmod?
What does dmesg tell you regarding your boot and hardware detection? IIRC libata and ata_piix modules are required for that chipset. You may get better success at detecting drives if you configure your controller in PATA mode. Also try the Beta LiveCD found here http://dev.gentoo.org/~livewire/ or grab x86-installcd-minimal-2005.0-rc5.iso from http://gentoo.gg3.net/experimental/x86/livecd/x86/ as these have the latest kernel and better hardware support for SATA controllers.

Thanks!
I checked the controller setup and it was set to "RAID, otherwise AHCI"
I changed it to combination of SATA/PATA and the hardwaredetection found instantly at next boot
But what is the difference between RAID and SATA/PATA? And will I see any change in performance by changing?
And by the way, the harddrive it found earlier at boot wasn´t the harddrive it was a usb-memory I had attached when trying to save the logs |

As I understand it the libata drivers used for SATA detection can not as yet cope with seeing RAID drives configured on that controller. In any case the RAID option on that controller does not implent true hardware RAID but actually uses software on the controller itself, so by choosing SATA/PATA you are actually ditching the RAID part and enabling mormal "Parallel" ATA. So if you want to use RAID you can do so by using the linux kernel RAID drivers with little impact on performance |

You have to enter your bios
under a menu named something like drives and there it should be a option "SATA operation" or equal
Where the option is depends on what manufactor and motherboard you have, but it should be quite easy to find |
