|
|
Ok I've just done a stage1 install and I'm now at the login prompt.
I use root as the user and the password that I created during installation. I get "Login Incorrect".
So I booted from the live cd and chroot into my system and changed the password and it says that password change was successful.
I reboot and at the login prompt, i try to log in as root and I still can't login in.
I've changed the password 3 times already and I still can't login.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a new bug? I know that they recently fixed it where I can actually go through the whole installation process without compiling errors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chances are that you skipped one or more crucial bits of the install.
PAM is a possible suspect for login troubles, as it has a USE flag that you should definitely not disable during installation.
Log in with the LiveCD (mount the gentoo stuff) and add a normal user; make sure to add the user to the wheel group.
Now see if you can log in with that user.
If so, check if you can su. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Thaks for the reply.
I did as you said and I can log in as a user and do "su" and it works.
Do I have to always do this or is there a way that I can log in as root from the beginning?
Thanks again. |

No, you don't need to do this forever from now on
This is probably a PAM issue.
Look at /etc/pam.d/login; compare it with su and system-auth. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I looked at all 3 files and realized that I had no idea what I was looking for. They all look similiar, with a couple of differences.
Am I suppose to make sure that the login file has all the entries from the other 2 files?
I don't want to be a pain, I can live with this minor flaw. I won't be loggin in as root as much anyway.
Thanks for helping me through this final hurdle. Then again, I still have a lot of packages to install so this might not be the final one yet. I wonder what kind of obstacles lie ahead
Thanks |

The first thing to do in that case is to install and configure sudo so you can emerge as a normal user.
While not very secure it is quite handy, pending the resolution of your other problem. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
