Problem with emerge in stage 1

I can't post lost of detail as I have no way of getting data from the machine doing the emeging.
The problem starts when emerging gettext-0-14.1. The first sign of an error occured here:

libtool.m4: error: problem compiling CXX test program

This same error occurs 3 more times. On an earlier attermp I had a problem with libtool which was fixed by emerging it.. I tried this and the first error message occured close to the end

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/patch-2.5.9-r1 failed.

I then tried emerge patch, and at the end it said

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/gettext-0.14.1 failed

which is what I got near the ned of the first problem.
Clearly I could use some help here! Thanks,

Wow, circular dependencies, so the rumors are true then .

I recall reading that lots of stuff is pretty fubared on stage1 amd64 right now. You might want to take a look at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-281920.html and https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82027
Make sure you are doing an emerge sync before bootstrapping to get what's supposed to be the fixed tree (hope it's not ~amd64)

If those don't work you might try the stage 1 on 3 method: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274968.html which I would suggest doing anyway.

The Stage 1 on 3 Install

As mentioned from donjuan, doing a 'stage 1 from a stage3' would be better that spending a lot of time for a pure stage1. I did this one week ago and it worked great. First I also tried a pure stage1 and know the gettext-problem. I only came around this by specifying nothing as CFLAGS. Don't know what's going wrong there...
