i've followed the x86 handbook step by step (even partitioning table is the same) the only thing i changed was that i made my root partition reiserfs. Now when i get to chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash i get this why? i've bin through the handbook to this point 3 times formatting and downloading iso again and downloading the tar files. (doin a stage2 install)

Are you downloading the correct stage tarball for your processor? For example, a stage 2 for pentium 3 will not run on a Athlon processor. |

yes corrently running slackware and my processor (via C3) is a i686 so i went into the x86 menu and picked i686... thats right no? |

I though a C3 was a i586 because it has a few i686 instructions missing. _________________ Regards,

i'm not really sure but slackware has it down as i686 and i haven't experienced any problems... is there some kind of list that i can look up my exact model?
anyway it's a C3 samuel 800Mhz looked around on google but i can't find a list or any reference to what the samuel is |

Doesn't the C3 chip support more X86 intructions compared to the AMDi586... ? You might
try the X86 stages .... The Via C3 is more intel complant ... More likely the x86 would be a
better choice. |

Yes it does - but not all of them. I think it only has compare and exchange missing but thats enough.
gcc may have C3 support. If it does, it will make the best use of the C3.
Using a i586 tarball does not mean installing a i586 system _________________ Regards,

thank you....will try and let u know... even though the comp i was workin on is at pieces at the moment cuz i'm workin on a custom case...
