kernel 2.6.10 on x86 platform. using two scsi drivers i've setup a number of raid 1 partitions. the last partition is a volume group hosting /usr, /home, etc.

on boot md auto detects the raid drives fine. then the green Gentoo Linux; starts (what is this phase in the boot process is this called?) and part way down:

* Setting up the Logical Volume Manager...
/sbin/rc: line 415: 5243 Segmentation fault /sbin/vgscan >/dev/nul [ ok ]
* Starting up RAID devices: ...

note this only happens most of the time, not all the time. sometimes the system will boot fine.

i recall the last time i setup a similar system i ran into this problem. the issue was lvm was starting before the raid device had started. the solution was to edit /sbin/rc or something similar.

i've searched and searched and can't seem to find how to switch the order of these two, and for lack of shell scripting abilities, can't figure out /sbin/rc enough to edit it.

finally found a reference to it in: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_Install_on_Software_RAID_mirror_and_LVM2_on_top_of_RAID

the guilty file is: /etc/init.d/checkfs

i can't think of a reason why lvm would need to be started before raid. can this be changed in the distribution???
