Hi

I tried to remove Portmap Service from Default Runlevel 'cause I dont think I need it...by typing: rc-update del portmap
but the protmap is not found:
* portmap not found in any of the specified runlevels.

So, I decided to use the Gnome Application "Services" to remove it: but at boot process: It was loaded. I even checked its status on The services Gnome applications and it was running.
What's the cause of this. Is this because another program needs it?

Any suggestions please :?:

Thanks

Shouldn't it be
Code:
rc-update del portmap default

what IcEonFirE did it's right, running rc-update del portmap delete portmap from any run level, you're way only delete it from default runlevel (portmap it's usually on boot runlevel)

IcEonFirE, I don't know why you can't delete it, maybe it's used by another service, like nfs daemon (anyway i think the massage should be different from what you got)
maybe you're running it from /etc/conf.d/local.start?

Portmap is used by other services (exactly which, I don't remember offhand. see what starts directly after it). You can't remove it, it is a dependency. Why did you want to?

Hi

I verfified the files /etc/conf.d/local.start and there's nothing on it.
Besides, the service that loads after Portmap is famd. I wanted get rid of it because I don't need it (I don't use protocols such as NFS & NIS): Here all services I load at boot maybe i thought there was 1 taht depends on portmap:

-metalog
-acpid
-D-BUS System messagebus
-portmap
-famd
-Hardware Abstraction Layer
-hdparm
-iptables
-Network File System
-Name Service Cache Deamon
-numlock
-saslauthd
-squid
-vixie-cron
-gdm
-local

Famd is the one. To double check, look at /etc/init.d/famd. There will be a "depends portmap" line in there.
