I just bought a ViewSonic VE710b LCD screen. The suggested resolution is 1280x1024. When I run windoze, the screen runs at this resolution. However, in Linux, I can get a maximum of 1024x768.
Here is my xorg.conf since I know it will be asked (sorry for the extra junk in it  ) :

It looks like you got an nvidia card...and are using the kernel provided "nv" driver. Perhaps you could try installing the official nvidia-drivers. As well, you can try adding modelines to your device section. You can find lots of modeline generators on the web by querying google for "modeline generator". But be warned you'll need to know a lot about your HW (most should be in your manual).
Do you got any warnings regarding your resolution in /var/log/Xog.0.log??
Also, next time you post your xorg.conf, could you please remove the commented out sections....it just makes it easier for us to see what you conf actually is.
EDIT: Just realized you do have the nvidia driver installed. So just ignore my comments about that. Check your var/log/Xorg.0.log file though.
Also, are you running KDE?? If so, it might be resizing your desktop through the RANDR extension. Have a look in the control centre under Peripherals->Display and see if the "Apply Settings on KDE startup" is enabled or even visible. |

Thanks for the advice. I was checking around in the manuals as you suggested - somehow I had put the HorizSync range wrong ( the upper bound should be 82 not 62 ) - which would explain the low resolution. It now works perfectly  . |
