the dn=com in my ldap dir doesnt seem to exist! help!

Ive setup openldap, and phpldapadmin
it starts, and connects and seems to answer command line searches

however my directory is empty
dead empty
doesnt have the dn=example,dn=com nor the plain dn=com ... and none of the stuff the docs suggest to do seem to create them .. tried ldapadd and ldapindex .. nothing..

thoughts?
