Kmix mixer recognition problem

I can't get kmix to work under KDE 3. I have alsa working fine, and sounds works okay. I have command line use of amixer, but kmix can't seem to find the mixer. I'm not totally sure how to set that up and have searched for the answer to no avail. I have a Creative SBL card using the emu10k1 module.

I read on another google search that devfs messes up kmix, is that true?

Anyone else have this problem and solve it? Thanks...
