I am a true novice at using linux (gentoo) , but have been bothered from the beginning with a kde/alsa problem.

Whenever I log into kde, my alsamixer goes into a muted and off setting for Master. I can open a terminal and use
Code:
amixer set Master 100% unmute
to restart alsa and enjoy full audio, but each time I log out and back into kde, the alsamixer is reset to a full muted condition with the Master once again in an "off" mode.

What on earth is going on?

This is totally frustrating, and I wonder if others are experiencing a similar problem??

Just open up kmix, unmute your channels and in kmix prefrences (Settings->Configure Kmix) enable the option "Restore volumes on login" and it will set all your channels to whatever settings they were when last you used KDE. You can also set kmix to dock into your panel.
