Hello. My name is Dave and I have plunged into the world of Gentoo Linux.
I have just installed 2004.3 on my HP laptop zd7000. I used Partition Magic to resize the existing Windows partition and created a smaller Linux parition on which I initially installed Fedora Core 3. But a colleague at work told me about Gentoo and I installed it on a crash & burn PC to try it out. After I installed it, it ran a lot quicker than Fedora Core 3 on that same PC, so I installed it on my personal laptop.
"Emerge" is pretty slick.
Well, here I am - a new Gentoo user. I'll be popping in from time to ttime to ask some questions, as well as provide some answers if I can.
Thanks. _________________ Dave |

Welcome! Glad you like it.
However, not a support request - moved from Installing Gentoo. _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

Welcome
Some advice.... learn all the tips and tricks of portage. It can make your system wonderful, or it can tear it to peices. Lern about all the files in /etc/portage, and it's always helpful to learn about things like reverse dependencies for when you want to remove something. There's quit a few threads on the forums on the topic. I went probably a year or so without really learning some of the more specific things of portage, but now I actually put the time in learning it life has gotten a whole lot easier

Thanks. Yeah, it's addictive, but so are computers in general. I screw around with a bunch of stuf simultaneously. Right now I'm emerging openoffice on the laptop and while that's going on, I'm doing something else on my desktop under XP.
As a matter of fact, I just read the man page on emerge to see how to upgrade a package. I didn't get my question answered, so I'll be posting it in a different section of the forum if I can't find an answer searching here. _________________ Dave |
