I updated my system today via "emerge -u world" and since I rebooted, everytime I try to login I get:

"-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied."

Changing the permissions to "o+rw /dev/null" fixes the problem, until I reboot. Then it is back to the above error.

Does anyone know what package is broken that is causing this strange error, and how I might permanently resolve this issue rather than having to change the permissions of /dev/null everytime I reboot?

Thanks in advance.

You could be lazy and add the chmod command to /etc/conf.d/local.start

Or you could undergo the (admitedly immense) strain of searching the forum for people who have already solved your problem: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-316544-highlight-udev+dev+null.html

;)

Thank you Gherald for the link. I did search teh forum, but didn't find anything that worked on a permanent basis. Apparently I have yet to master the art of forum searching.

That link *mostly* fixes the problem. I don't get the /dev/null error anymore, but now my aterm/xterm terminals won't open from the fluxbox menu.

Any ideas?

Seperate problem then (although might still be udev related).

Is it just the fluxbox menu that can't start terms? i.e. can you open terms some other way?

I tried using "fbrun" to execute the terminals, still to no avail.

Does the console from which you started X show anything? How about /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

I had it, but got it solved with the commands below:

emerge --unmerge udev
rm -r /etc/udev
emerge udev

this is definitely a udev problem -- i've just finished applying udev "upgrades" to my box, and now i'm getting hit with this error too.

udev in the x86 stable branch is now broken.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92333

now this is wierd. i just "upgraded" my stable branch box to udev-056 and as soon as i ran dispatch-conf, i started having the permission errors at logon, such as the infamous "-bash: /dev/null: Permission denied."

interestingly, the problem appears to have disappeared after a reboot. (!)

I had the same problem as stated above with the permission denied with /dev/null

Rebooted, and unfortunatly still had the same problem...

When trying to run fluxbox... It boots fine, however none of the terminals show up when I try to run them...

Mozilla on the other hand works...

Currently I am downgrading from udev-056 to udev-045 to see if it will fix my problems...

Yup... that fixed my problem...

Anyone know what udev is used for?

We might want to say that udev is unstable in x86

I had the same issue when logging in. I had updated my system and forgot to run etc-update and update the config files that changed. Once I updated them, the problems was gone.

I don't get the error anymore. Seems to have fixed it.
