KDM and GDM don't want to work

Hi,
I've been trying to get onto linux for a while, I now dual boot Gentoo and XP, but my display manager keeps on crashing. KDM never starts up, it tries to start, fails and leaves me at the commandl ine. GDM tries and fails twice, but usually starts on the thrid try. I go to an engineering school and I have had multiple linux gurus look at it, and they're stumped. Also the error logs suppossedly don't get created. Tell me what else you want me to post. Sorry about the format of this post, but it's my first. I just wish that linux's window managers didn't suck so much.
