I just installed the alsa stuff (using the excellent gentoo also how to). Everything works ok as user root (skype (talk and listen) play audio CD's etc) but as user dick I can only listen in skype and play audio CDs: microphone does not work.

I changed the in /etc/devfsd.conf the 660 to 666:
REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 666
REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 666

but this didn't help.

user dick is in the audio group
In kmix all looks OK

Any idea what might be wrong?
Dick

devfsd.conf may have done this for you, but make sure those permissions are applied to the microphone device file(s). Also be sure to have rebooted after changing devfsd.conf so that devfsd reloads its settings. (there's a way to avoid rebooting using kill as well, but I forget it)

Problem fixed:

I had to check the "Full duplex" option in KDE Control Center->Sound&Multimedia->SoundSystem adn then the "HArdware" tab.
