Error on first emerge --sync?

Hi all,

This is only my third gentoo install, so I'm kinda new at this. I was following the handbook and when I get to the first emerge --sync, I get the following error:

!!! Error: -y is an invalid short action or option.

I tried downloading a different version of portage just to be safe, but it still seems to do the same thing. I checked the MD5sum and it's okay so the download of portage shouldn't be screwed up. What I'm I doing wrong here?

You must use '--' (dash-dash), not '-' (dash).
