I know theres the "dns proxy=yes" option that will cause dns lookup in case the wins server doesnt have the answer,but I'd really like to use DNS in place of WINS, cuz Ive set up a nice tinydns and dont really want use WINS.

Then don´t use Samba, use NFS/CIFS or whatever. Windows computers need WINS and that´s why it is in Samba.

Oh really? Have you ever heard of AD? It uses DNS for name resolution. Ive installed AD many times, never needed to run a WINS server!

Who cares about AD support for Samba? I was commenting upon what you said that windows needs WINS, because it just dont.

Windows need WINS when using Samba, so I don´t see what are you trying to say here. I am not interested in flamewars. Go and use Windows AD if you want.
