Hey all! I have an annoying problem. Running Mozilla 1.6, and when I click on regular old links in webpages it brings up a download file dialog instead of just opening the link. This is all kinds of links,,,,to .htm, .php, .pl, .whatever files. Even stranger is that this problem occurs in spurts,,,for a few hours it will do it, then stop and everything will work fine. Then it will just start doing it again for no apparent reason. Any ideas? I have scoured the forums looking for this particular problem, but couldnt seem to find the answer. Then again,,,I might have overlooked it on accident. If so, a link to the solution would be just as good...

Thanks in advance :D

This doesn't look like to be a Mozilla issue, but rather a server issue. The server decides how programs should open a URL via the MIME type. If this happens with every website and you are using a caching proxy server, then it might be a proxy server issue.

Unfortunately I am not using a caching proxy my friend. All sites do it(when it happens) and no intermediaries besides my firewall(though a caching server is actually being worked on right now lol)...Thanks for your response though! Any other ideas?

Then have a look at this:

Preferences
-> Navigator
-> Helper Applications

Maybe something overrides the default handling of those filetypes. Might be some nasty (or just buggy) plugin.

Have fun! =D

Oh well, you made me hungry, too. But I guess, we're getting off topic. =)

Serious: try to delete the directory ~/.mozilla - but be careful! This will clear out all your Mozilla settings - it will also wipe out your passwords and delete your Emails, if you use Mozilla Mail, so rescue them first. Better approach: rename the directory to ~/.mozilla-backup (or something like this) and then try again. Of course, Mozilla shouldn't be running when doing this.

When you say it does it for a few hours and then starts working again, is Mozilla running the whole time? Is this just one site this is happening on or is it multiple sites?

its on the whole time,,,left mozilla running while i went out ;)
there doesnt seem to be a discernible pattern to it...as far as startup/restarting goes.
just pisses me off in general. it was fine for the last 20 minutes, then when i clicked on one of the page markers to go to the next page on a forum thread(the thread about bill gates being knighted), lo and behold the download box popped up and said fsck you again....:x
