Hi All!

Recently, I have been needing to get Ad-Hoc mode working between my two computers (both running gentoo) and my orinoco gold pcmcia card has been giving me a hard time. This is my iwconfig when first inserting the card:
Code:

eth2      IEEE 802.11-DS  ESSID:""  Nickname:"HERMES I"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.457GHz  Access Point: 44:44:44:44:44:44
          Bit Rate:11Mb/s   Tx-Power=15 dBm   Sensitivity:1/3
          Retry limit:4   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0/92  Signal level:134/153  Noise level:134/153
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

What is interesting is that when I type the following command:

Code:
iwconfig eth2 essid mesh mode Ad-hoc

eth2 turns into this:
Code:
eth2      IEEE 802.11-DS  Nickname:"HERMES I"
          Mode:Ad-Hoc  Tx-Power=15 dBm
          RTS thr:off
          Encryption key:off

And the card becomes unusable. I also found that the same card wouldn't connect to the other machine when running windoze. There is no WEP enabled and both machines have static IP's. I can guarantee the other machine works. I tested the connection via my Broadcom 54g internal wireless card in Windoze.

UPDATE:

If I put the card in demo Ad-hoc mode
Code:
iwpriv eth2 set_port3 1

The above problem goes away but I am still unable to ping the other box. Do you think installing airsnort or kismet might shed light on the issue? If it will what do you suggest might be the best way to go about getting it installed?

MACHINE INFO:
emachines m6807 2.6.9-gentoo-r14
yenta-socket pcmcia
orinoco firmware 8.72

Well, the card works fine in managed mode but no Ad-Hoc. I guess I'm going to give up my search.
