I seem to have a problem with some permission involved with accessing alsa or oss. And yes my user is a member of the audio group. Well at least I included audio in the groups when I added the user.
When i try to play a file under xmms it gives an error saying it could not open the plugin. If I try to launch alsamixer I get "alsamixer:function snd_ctl_open failed for default:permission denied"
I can use alsa and oss(through alsa emulation) as root though. Having to su every time I want to play an mp3 is getting annoying after the 3rd time though...
Also my alsamixer settings revert to muted and turned down when I reboot. How do i get them to stick?
EDIT:
I've got it to work;
all the sound devices in /dev/dsp had erally restrictive permissions. Is that a bug in the gentoo installer? I've instsalled on exactly the same setup and never got that before!
Also I've got aumix working and added it to the default runlevel so my mixer leels get restored on boot. |

Do you use udev?
Maybe your node permissions are not set for the audio group. Check you rules and add GROUP=audio, if missing.
The store settings you find under /etc/conf.d/alsasound

Yup uved is installed. And the udev permissions file is fine. Could it be a bug in udev? |
