but i use kernel from Suse

Cool , I am helping a friend install Suse on an Acer and came across your ealier post that seem to match the fglrx rpm available for SuSE.

/suse/i586/fglrx-8.10.19-6.i586.rpm

I see in the readme:
Quote:
RADEON X700 XT (RV410 5E4A), RADEON X700 PRO (RV410 5E4B),
RADEON X700 SE (RV410 5E4C), RADEON X700 (RV410 5E4D),
RADEON X700 (RV410 5E4F), MOBILITY RADEON X700 (M26 5652),

and in another post here
Quote:
"Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS, TMDS"

Could you confirm your kernel xorg and fglrx versions so I can compare.

Are you still using ChipID 0x5D57? The readme claims 5652 is supported , is that the value that fails?

Thanks for finding this trick, these cards can be a nightmare to install.

Just go to closest mirror of SUse and look in supplementary/X/ATI/suse93/i386/fglrx/8.14.13 and read README In this directory. When follow instructions in this file you need to edit /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl and include in end of section with MONITOR LAYOUT "LVDS, TMDS" and that's it :) .

Hi!

I just installed Gentoo on my Acer 8100, with the use of the config Files und X is working perfect =) So thanks a lot.

But the other hardware components are not complete working. I used the kernel configs from above, but eth and wlan
are still not working :( Currently my kernel is the stable 2.6.12-r6 and i used make oldconfig before compiling.
I think the simpelst way would be if anyone could post his config for the 2.6.12. Thanks =)

Some more questions:
Is the CDRW Patch still needed ?
Is the ACPI Bios "hack" still needed?

Great thanks to all readers and posters!

Sorry for my english

Sorry for my OT, but I need to know this. How is solved delivery of Windows on this type of notebook? Is it only recovery CD with windows preinstalled on HDD and when you want reinstall them, it formats whole HDD or is it only Windows install CD and HDD is empty?

I need to know that, because I probably want to buy this NB. Thanks and have a nice day.

Hm i never really looked at the cd's so i'm not sure, but i think its a recovery version.
But the i386 Folder ist on Partition C: so you can make a real install cd.
While installing Gentoo i figured out that a recovery partition was used too.
And at last an Acer backup tool asked to burn a backup dvd at first boot.

If you really want to know wich windwos version is onboard i have to search and look? ? ?

Oh and it's bought in Germany, perhaps the package could be diffrent?

greetz

So you can delete whole HDD and format as you wish? What is important for me is that if I use a recovery CD, if it formats whole HDD as it wish. When I burn Win on CD, I suppose that it do the same.

So I want to know if I can use normal Win install CD with serial number on bottom of this notebook.

I have requests from some people to send my config files so i thing is good idea post configs here to make Gentoo working much easyer on this $@$%#$ laptop ;)

1.kernel config 2.6.12-gentoo-r6
2.xorg config
3.custom dsdt file for 3c22 bios
4.make config
5.grub config

and finaly most simple and elegant solution to resolve problem with dvd-rw and DMA

6.piix patch

This piix patch register ICH6M chipset to IDE module (not SATA).
Now hard disk is "hda" not "sda" and dvd is "hdc" not "sr0".
DMA on both of it is ON :)
Here you can find more info about it.
Enjoy!

Hi!

I still haven't done some jobs in my Acer 8100.
With the piix.c patch i get a kernel panic while booting :(

I changed in my grub.conf root=/dev/sda2 to root=/dev/hda2. In fstab all "sda"s to "hda"s but it wont work. Any tips?

The Custom dsdt.hex works perfectly =)
And i have no lines with the 3c22 bios.
But i did not get OpenGl running with Ati?

Hi SergOS,

I have a question about UDMA: What perforace do you get with the DVD drive? I get arround 4,5MB/sec using a DVD, using a CD it goes down to 1,5MB/sec.

dmesg output:
Code:

There is no change after using "hdparm -X66 /dev/hdc". The speed is still slow!

Thanks, samy

On my system with hdparm i have the same numbers, but i can't
explain how with transfer rate 1,5mb/sec i copy 480mb audiocd with k3b

Is it possible to lower the core frequency from the ATI mobility X700.
Or enable powersaving functions?

Wich max. battery time do you have?

I have the same question: Is there any Possibility to switch the Radeon X700 to Powersave mode or something like that.

I have about 2h max Batterytime.

Under Windows it is about the double with ATI powermanagement.

Snap.

8.18.6 contains a DynamicClocks switch but I get an Option is not used message with the latest drivers 8.18.8.

I suspect this may be a pciE thing that hasn't been coded. The release cycles are pretty short at present so it may be coming.

I have an MT34 and get 2 hrs on battery - cpufreqd seems to be fine but I can't get the temp below 60 c when its stable. ':?'

Here's hoping

Hey....
Just curious...

does anyone have ALL of the following working on the 8104? (i.e. at the same time  )
acpi with dsdt patch (3C22) from sourceforge (or my own fixed DSDT)
ipw2200 wireless?
bluetooth? (although I could care less about this really...)
(and vmware NOT running slow with acpi enabled?!?...thats just icing on top, but vmware runs slow with acpi enabled, and fast with it disabled...
can't figure out why though)

It seems that if I do not use a patched DSDT, i can get the wireless card to work (module: ipw2200, options: led=1) etc etc...
and the bluetooth to work as well.
but the battery status does not work (obviously!, as I'm not using a patched DSDT)

however, if I use a patched DSDT, the battery status seems to work, but I can not turn the "radio on"/kill switch of the wireless card
(even by: echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/0000:06:03.0/rf_kill)
and the buttons at the front do not toggle the radio kill switch for me either.

and add to that, if I boot with acpi=off
I can't get anything to work (usb mouse, network, wireless, bluetooth)

is this just my crazy machine?, or do others have the same problem?
(its starting to annoy me now, as depending on what I want to do, I have to reboot into different kernels that I've made, and added to the grub selection menu)

other then that, everything works fine on my machine  (i.e. the only other things I can think of are DVD, and fglrx with DRI enabled)

thanks!

Hey thanks exobuzz!

that worked like a charm...!

1 grub entry removed! ;)

anyone else on the wireless and bluetooth? is it just me, or does it not work with the patched acpi?

well I got everthing working...and all it took was fixing my dsdt table from scratch again (not using the ones from the acpi4linux site)
once I did, recompiled, and re-integrated with initrd...everything worked!

but I didn't stop there...I wanted to know what exactly was different between my fixes, and any of the ones found on the acpi4linux site.
so I decided to incorporate changes from one of the fixed dsdt on the acpi4linux site into my disassembled dsdt.
after doing the changes, I did a diff on myfile, and the one from acpi4linux and found the following:

diff dsdtTable3C22fromacpi4linux.asl dsdtTable3C22_MINE.asl

100c100
< OperationRegion (MNVS, SystemMemory, 0x3FE89D2C, 0x0100)
---
> OperationRegion (MNVS, SystemMemory, 0x7FE89D2C, 0x0100)
6278c6278
< OperationRegion (SMI1, SystemMemory, 0x3FE99E2D, 0x00000120)
---
> OperationRegion (SMI1, SystemMemory, 0x7FE99E2D, 0x00000120)

its interesting to note that my dsdt has a 7 instead of a 3 in what looks like a memory address
(0x7FE99E2D vs 0x3FE99E2D for example). Also, these are lines that were NOT modified in any way (there are no warnings, or errors reported for these lines, or anything even close to them!)

after having done all the same changes, but leaving my 0x7etc...etc...., I compiled, and integrated with initrd.
et voila....everything works. If I changed back to the 0x3 etc etc.... and...wireless and bluetooth no longer worked!...

so, I guess the moral of the story is to perhaps fix your own dsdt found in /proc/acpi
rather than using one from acpi4linux? maybe not all travelmate 8100's are equal, even though the bios is the same? (I have a travelmate 8104 bought in canada).
maybe this has something to do with the amount of ram in a system (8103's I believe come with 512 standard, and 8104's come with 1GB standard, and my machine was upgraded to 2GB)
I think the best strategy would be to get a dsdt.asl from acpi4linux, and use that as a reference for fixing your own dsdt?

anyone else have thoughts on this?

so, long story short. Everything is now working!
(man...I think I was rambling there! sorry! ;)

Do ANYONE have working video-resize, because that's only what's missing on my aspire 1690 (x700 gfx)?
I kind of have to watch videos in their original aspect, not to talk about games, which just become a little frame on the screen :-/

so, I guess the moral of the story is to perhaps fix your own dsdt found in /proc/acpi
rather than using one from acpi4linux? maybe not all travelmate 8100's are equal, even though the bios is the same? (I have a travelmate 8104 bought in canada).
maybe this has something to do with the amount of ram in a system (8103's I believe come with 512 standard, and 8104's come with 1GB standard, and my machine was upgraded to 2GB)
I think the best strategy would be to get a dsdt.asl from acpi4linux, and use that as a reference for fixing your own dsdt?

anyone else have thoughts on this?

I first used SergOS's dsdt.hex, which worked for me. After upgrading the memory from 512MB to 2 GB linux only boots with acpi=off. Otherwise it freezes after some seconds. So I now got my dsdt and fixed it. Comparing it with the dsdt I had before upgrading the RAM, the same lines changed:
Code:
100c100
<     OperationRegion (MNVS, SystemMemory, 0x1FE89D2C, 0x0100)
---
>     OperationRegion (MNVS, SystemMemory, 0x7FE89D2C, 0x0100)
6274c6274
<         OperationRegion (SMI1, SystemMemory, 0x1FE99E2D, 0x00000120)
---
>         OperationRegion (SMI1, SystemMemory, 0x7FE99E2D, 0x00000120)

So I completly agree with your strategy.

@Growlizing video-rezise doesn't work, if I use fglrx

Found the answer to the video-resize problem... Forgot to load the extmod module in X
Then it all works like a dream :)

I am fairly new to linux, and can someone give me a linux howto on how to apply the hacked DSDT and kernel patches, etc. Thanks!

There already is a pretty good explanation at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Fix_Common_ACPI_Problems#Incorporating_the_Fix_into_the_Kernel
:)
