Hi,

I replaced XFree with Xorg. After that replacement all 3D games don't work anymore. Tuxracer will crash every time I start it.
I'm using a Matrox G400.

I installed DRI like described in the DRI-How-To. Before I switched to Xorg everything worked fine.

Some information:
2.4.26-gentoo-r14
i686 AMD Athlon(tm) Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
Xorg-X11 installed: xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4

Kernel is configured as required (DRI-HowTo).

glxgears is running quite well, no problems with that.
Only the games chrashes. After starting Tuxracer it will crash and I can't use my machine anymore until I reset the pc. No reactions on any input.

Tuxracer gives some errors:
Code:

Thanx.
Without the DRI-Module Tuxracer will start but it's very, very slow. Also glxgears is very slow. So this can't be the solution for my problem.

There must be something wrong elsewhere... With Xfree it worked fine. With Xorg the 3D-full-screen games will crash every time I start them.

But thanx again for your help.

uhm you have disabled that DRM/DRI thing in kernel? cause it's causing problems with xorg.
Have you done opengl-update <insert driver> ? If not it uses the X11 gl-drivers, which is kind of bad ;)

erm by the way.. should it be xorg.conf rather than xfree86.conf?
My xorg.conf is as follows (Nvidia) :

Code:
Section "Device"
    BoardName "GeForce FX5600"
    Identifier  "Device[0]"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    #VideoRam    131072
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate

    Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,1024x768"
    Screen 0
    Option "NvAGP" "2"
    VendorName "NVidia"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "Xinerama" "on"
    Option "AGPMode" "8"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "True"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"
    Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"
    Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT,CRT"
    Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-69"
    Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50-160"

EndSection

Hi,

thanx for your answers!

I checked my config-file again. Everything seems to be ok. The config file was generated by Xorg, so it shouldn't be wrong.

The log file says that Xorg reads the XF86Config (see above or at the following two lines). So the differnet name shouldn't be the problem.
Code:

(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sun Mar  6 16:12:26 2005
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config"

I checked again for DRI settings within the kernel. No DRI settings done. I went through the DRI-Howto at minimum 10 times.

I don't understand the problem... Is there anything known to Xorg / mga (matrox) problems? As soon as I try to start a full screen game the X server chrashes. Everything you can play in a window won't crash. Whats going on???

Thanx again!

Richard

These are my results of glxgears. Strange again: the libGL warnings (see tuxracer output).

Code:

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x28
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2c
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x30
2016 frames in 5.0 seconds = 403.200 FPS
2323 frames in 5.0 seconds = 464.600 FPS

Without DRI it will be around 160 FPS.

Currently I compile my kernel with agpgart as a module. Later I will try running the system without it. Thanx.

I tried it with agpgart as a module. I killed it (rmmod) and startet glxinfo and glxgears. Those strange warnings (see above: libGL warning) don't come but I only have 160 FPS (glxgears). It's the same if I don't use the DRI module.

Duh... Will it ever function again?

Thanx again.

man thats really strange , but ive heard stories of ppl that had nvidias FX 5200 and never got more then 700 fbs, i dont think its a software problem anymore, probably a chipset problem, wich chipset do you have ?

I know. It's really strange...

Here's my chipset:
Code:

$ lspci | grep AGP
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400 AGP (rev 04)

Kernel is configured probably.
Some more ideas?

Thanx.

so if you have set your viaxxx as module on kernel if you have all modules loaded maybe the problem is on some module that isnt suppose to be loaded ...

Do you have composite enable ?

or try to change the values in
Code:
Option "NvAGP" "2"

from 0 to 3 to see what happens

Hi,

imho the NvAGP option is for nvidia cards only. Am I right? I do own a matrox g400. So I didn't enable this option. If I should, give me a message.

Composite is now enabled:
Code:

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Composite
(**) Extension "Composite" is enabled
(II) MGA(0): Sync:  Separate  Composite  SyncOnGreen

agpgart and viaxxx are NO modules. I built them into the kernel (the dri howto recommended this).

Composite enabled doens't change the behavior of my crazy machine. Same warnings, same chrashes.

Thanx.

Set them as module, and disable composite on your xorg.conf , probably its composite has you may know composite is not enough stable yet and it has a few bugs

I set them as modules and disabled composite (as before, I just tested it after your remark above). But also tuxracer crashes, glxgears shows again around 460 FPS.

I really don't understand why 3d full screen games do crash. It must depend on my replacemnt of XFree. So Xorg must have some troubles on my machine (with DRI or mga - who knows...).
I just replaced Xfree with Xorg. Nothing else. After that tuxracer refuses to work. Tuxracer starts (also quake3) but after the first few inputs it crashes.

Thanx for your help! It's great that you try to help me all the time!

Ok man buit yourself a new xorg.conf but keep that one just in case, built one with everything you need and then try again,
Are you sure your video card handles full display Games ?? some cards dont maybe thats why, but for now try making a new xorg.conf from scratch

Hi,

ok, I built a new xorg.conf (from the scratch). Now there are some error messages (see below).
But first: my Matrox G400 supports full screen games. It did it before xorg very well (under xfree). Never ever had any problems. Must depend on xorg (imho).

The error messages (taken from Xorg.0.log):
Code:

(==) MGA(0): Default visual is TrueColor

So, no DRI enabled. Glxgears is slow (180 FPS), also Tuxracer. Without DRI everything works fine (tuxracer, quake3) but slow.

Thanx!

Code:
opengl-update xorg-x11
and
Code:

The modules are running:
Code:

agpgart                14536   0  (autoclean) (unused)
mga                    99072   0  (unused)

opengl-update already done.

I don't have a nvidia card so I don't think that I should emerge nvidia, right!?
I do need the driver "mga" for matrox. I guess nvidia drivers won't work with my matrox?!

Thanx. Richard

hum ... weird, you should find out wich chipset your card has and then try to set in kernel, but i dont think thats the probem , i think the problem is on xorg or xorg.conf , have you tried another version of xorg ?

Chipset is already known:
Code:

$ lspci | grep AGP
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400 AGP (rev 04)

Chipset also set in kernel.

I also think that the problem is located in xorg or xorg.conf.
I didn't try another version of xorg. The replacement was done by gentoo automatically. I never had a look at the portage to find out if there are any other versions of xorg. I'll have a look later.

Thanx! Richard.

try either reinstalling xorg and check your USE or you can do another xorg.conf from scratch, the problem is know on xorg defenetly, be sure that xorg is loading the correct xorg.conf

I updated xorg to 6.8.2-r8. Then I made the xorg.conf from the scratch. I emerged x11-drm again. I also compiled a new kernel (2.4.28).

But I have the same problems like before. Damn it! Everything is the same as before. I don't understand this anymore. Why worked everything fine with xfree86 and not with xorg?

Duhh...

Thanx. Richard
