after computer was rebooted, cannot use sound device as user

Okay, I finally get emacspeak and eflite to work with each other and then my roomate reboots my computer accidentally, but after it comes up again, emacspeak won't work because it can't access /dev/dsp.What can I do to remedy this problem?
